Land areas under hybrid rice cultivation, especially in Boro season, almost doubled in the past five years, according to the Bangladesh Department of Agriculture Extension.
The department’s study showed that hybrid rice fields during the boro season increased to 1.21 million hectares in 2020-21 up from 0.66 million hectares of land in 2017.

Capacitating seed dealers and producers of Bangladesh in improved seed production and marketing
The Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) and International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)-Bangladesh collaborated and organized a training activity to enhance awareness, knowledge, and skills of BADC-registered seed dealers and producers on rice seed production, processing, preservation, and marketing. The activity also aimed to increase the capacity of seed value chain actors to provide services to their networks and farmer communities.
A total 45 registered seed dealers and 15 seed producers and entrepreneurs participated in the Quality rice seed production, processing, preservation, and marketing of new rice varieties training program held on 21 December 2021 at BADC headquarters in Dhaka.
IRRI and ACI partner to develop improved rice varieties for rice growers in Bangladesh
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)and Advanced Chemical Industries Ltd. (ACI) announced today a partnership to build a state-of-the-art rice breeding program in Bangladesh. The partnership will aim to improve the lives of rice farmers through supporting better rice varieties and agricultural technologies. The collaboration will support a wide range of projects aimed to accelerate genetic research and advance breeding and product development for the Bangladesh rice ecosystem.
This agreement builds on the successful partnership developed between the two organizations through the Hybrid Rice Development Consortium (HRDC), started in 2014, which is a public private partnership that enhances the dissemination of hybrid rice technology. HRDC, of which ACI has been a member since May 2014, was established at IRRI in 2008.
FtF Bangladesh, IRRI, and partner seed companies discuss work plan to update private-sector breeding technologies
Feed the Future (FtF) Bangladesh, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), and partner seed companies discussed research activities for 2022 to strengthen private-sector breeding programs through modern technologies. The preliminary plan was formulated during the annual review and workshop of FtF Bangladesh-IRRI Rice Breeding Public-Private Partnership Platform held on 10-14 October 2021 in Dhaka.
Led by Dr. Humnath Bhandari, IRRI country representative for Bangladesh, and Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, a plant breeder at IRRI, the workshop was attended by representatives from Supreme Seed Company Limited, Lal Teer Seed Limited, Ispahani Agro Limited, Aftab Bahumukhi Farms Limited, and Metal Agro Limited.
